OUR STORY
Matt and Samantha Reynolds, born and raised in Honolulu, have spent their lives building positive outlets for young people through the power of skateboarding! What started as parents wanting to create something meaningful for their own children grew into a movement that has impacted countless kids across Hawai‘i and abroad.
Back in 2005, they were putting on free skateboarding contests for the skateboarding community. Then in 2007 they launched SkateCare Hawai‘i, and just a few years later in 2011, they opened the doors to Proper Rideshop—a space designed to inspire, challenge, and support youth on and off their boards.
Matt, a lifelong surfer, skater, and foiler, has always felt at home in the ocean and on a skateboard. With a degree in Elementary Education, he was passionate about teaching not just his own kids, but every child who came through their programs. His joy for riding naturally blended with his love for mentoring, and that combination helped shape the heart of Proper Rideshop.
Their son, Heimana, was the spark behind it all. His passion for skating pushed Matt and Samantha to build a program where he—and others like him—could grow. That spark carried all the way to the world stage, where Heimana went on to have a successful professional career and made history competing in Park Skateboarding at the very first Olympics in Tokyo 2020. Their daughter took a different path but with the same spirit of service, becoming a dedicated nurse who now helps others every day.
Over the years, Matt and Samantha’s work has produced not only successful Olympians, professional skateboarders and professional surfers but also generations of confident, well-rounded, athletic, young people. Today, they’re known and respected for cultivating some of the best board riders in Hawai‘i while staying true to their mission: creating a safe, active, and positive space where kids can grow, thrive, and discover their full potential.
